I believe William Wilkshire was born in Ontario as stated in the census of 1881, but in the 1871 Ontario census it states that he was born in Newfoundland. In the 1891 census he was working as a mail driver. In 1901 census he was a general servan t, residing in Rose Bank Lot. 46, and worked for a farmer Mr. Grant for a yearly wage of $16. His health was very poorly at this time and they thought that the move to the country would be beneficial. When William and Miriam were married first t hey lived for a short time with his parents William and Catherine Wilkshire on the corner of Gerald and Orlebar St.. At the time of his death they lived in a little house situated in the old Church of England Cemetery on University Ave. which was later moved to Bishop St. and is still there today. At that time he was a gardener for St. Pauls Church. He died at 36 probably of TB.. The Daily Examiner - Dec. 12, 1905 states that the funeral was to be held from his late residence on Elm Ave . (University Ave.) and burial to be in the Peoples Cemetery.
William married Ash, Miriam Alfreda on 25 Jul 1887. Miriam (daughter of Ashe, Richard and Taylor, Mary Jane) was born on 6 Jun 1859 in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; died in 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada; was buried in 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. When Ruby and Sam were married they lived with her mother Miriam and her brothers John, who was twenty and Frederick who was just nine. John died in 1910 and her mother and Fredrick in 1911, all with typhoid fever. Sam worked mostly at trucking o wning his own wagon and team of horses. When the Great War broke out he enlisted in the army falling ill before making it over seas. He received an injury at the military barracks afterwards developing TB and was quite seriously ill by 1917. Fort unately he was able to get a small pension from the military which helped them survive. He spent a number of years in the Sanatorium at Charlottetown and then the Dalton Sanatorium in North Wiltshire. In 1921 he was sent to St. Agath des Monts, Q uebec. Ruby followed shortly after, quite a trip in those days, for a mother with four young children and expecting the fifth. Jessie was born there and they stayed for about two years. The mountain air did not improve Sam's health so they return ed home and after having a collapsed lung he was told they could do nothing more for him. As a last resort the doctors told him he could try living in the country. In 1923 they bought a farm in Brooklyn Lot 61 where Sam's father William was born . Ruby never quite adjusted to the country way of life my mother tells me, being a city girl born and bred. She was very strong, a hard worker, an excellent cook and housekeeper. She took a serious stroke at the age of 55, but with perseverance s he partially recovered. After suffering more strokes, she died in 1952. Sam, although having so much sickness lived to the age of 79.

My mother always told me that this child's name was Albertha Susanna Craswell Wilkshire. In burial registry #257 her name is down as Albatha Wiltshire, infant, buried June 26, 1904 by Rev. L. F. Williams. Most of the Wilkshires in this Register are spelled incorrectly with a " t ".
